Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light. Matthew 11:28-30
The Bible - right from the very beginning and throughout the Scriptures - is very focused on God’s great intention to have a relationship with man. So much so that God gave us rest once a week to recharge our soul through connection with Him.
I love this invitation that Jesus gives, and what better time to lean into this than right now! How many of you are weary? How many of you are burdened? How many of you are tired? The answer is quite simple: come to Jesus! You will find rest for your souls!
I have heard this passage preached a few different ways as it relates to the “yoke” that Jesus is talking about. But, regardless of where you come out on that teaching, one thing remains consistent: In order for you to find rest for your souls, you need to be close to Jesus!
Today, I want to remind you that without a close relationship with Jesus, you cannot rest or recharge your soul. Yes, you can fill up your soul with things of this world, but it will not give you rest. The things of this world are temporary. Before long, you will be soon wanting more because these things do not satisfy the deep longings of our soul.
Take a moment right now. Take a deep breath and remind yourself that Jesus knows what you need even before you ask. Draw close in worship, in prayer and in need. Be open to receiving His rest for you today.
Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? Matthew 6:26.
Application: Think about it, Matthew is talking about resting in God as a way of life. What would that look like for you?
